According to medical anthropologists Sydney Ross Singer and Soma Grismaijer, bras restrict the flow of lymphatic fluid, resulting in toxins being retained in the breasts with nowhere to go.
Singer and Grismaijer say that using a bra for more than 12 hours dramatically increases the risk of breast cancer. A woman who wears a bra 24/7 is, according with the authors, 125 more likely to develop breast cancer than a woman who rarely or never wears one.
Even limiting the time wearing a bra can make a big difference – women who wear a bra more than 12 hours a day, but not to bed, have one in seven risk of breast cancer, but wearing it less than 12 hours reduce her risk to one in 152. Not using one at all reduces the risk to one in 168.
